Questions candidates ask

Frequently asked questions

Can I become a Freemason in Japan if I am not Japanese?

Yes. Star in the East has always been an international lodge, and our members include Japanese nationals and men from many other countries. What matters is meeting the Grand Lodge of Scotland’s requirements and being able to attend.

Do I have to know a Freemason to join?

No. Many members first contacted the lodge directly. If you do not know anyone, the members you meet during the enquiry process can act as your proposer and seconder once they know you.

Is Freemasonry a religion?

No. Every member must believe in a Supreme Being, but Freemasonry has no theology of its own and does not replace a member’s faith. Men of different religions meet together, and religious discussion is not allowed in lodge.

Is Freemasonry a secret society?

No. The lodge’s address and meeting dates are public, and members may say they are Freemasons. The parts that are kept private are the modes of recognition and the detail of the ceremonies.

Can women join?

Lodges under the Grand Lodge of Scotland admit men only.

What language are meetings held in?

English.

How often does the lodge meet?

On the second Tuesday of each month from September to June, in the evening. July and August are the summer recess.

How much does it cost?

There is an initiation fee and an annual subscription, both set by the lodge, plus the cost of regalia and dinners. The Secretary will give you the current figures before you apply.

How long does it take to become a Master Mason?

The three degrees are conferred over a number of months, depending on the lodge’s calendar and your own progress. The Secretary can tell you the usual timetable.

What is the difference between Star in the East and other lodges in Japan?

Star in the East works under the Grand Lodge of Scotland. Most lodges in Japan belong to the Grand Lodge of Japan, which works an American-style ritual. Both are regular Freemasonry and members visit each other’s lodges.

I am already a Freemason. Can I visit or join?

Yes. See the page for visiting brethren. A Master Mason from a recognised Grand Lodge can also apply to join the lodge by affiliation.

Curious about Freemasonry in Yokohama?

Freemasons do not recruit. Every member of this lodge asked to join. If you are thinking about it, write to the Secretary and we will arrange an informal meeting.
